Nui Mat Than Cao Bang also known as Thung Mountain is one of Vietnam’s most extraordinary natural wonders. The mountain is famous for its giant circular hole that pierces through the limestone peak — earning it the nickname “the Eye of God Mountain.” With its unique shape and mystical beauty, Nui Mat Than has become a must-visit destination for travelers, photographers, and nature lovers seeking the untouched charm of northern Vietnam.
Located in Quoc Toan Commune, Tra Linh District (now part of Trung Khanh District), about 50 km Cao Bang City, Nui Mat Than is a highlight of Cao Bang Travel, alongside Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave, and Lenin Stream.

The name “Nui Mat Than”, which means “the Eye of God Mountain”, comes its distinctive feature — a massive circular hole at the mountain’s summit that resembles a divine eye gazing over the valley. Local legends say that the hole was created millions of years ago by natural erosion and water flow, forming one of the most perfect circular openings in Vietnam’s limestone mountains.
According to Tay and Nung folklore, this “eye” is believed to be that of a mountain god, watching over and protecting the people of Cao Bang. This blend of natural wonder and ancient myth gives Nui Mat Than its sacred, almost otherworldly charm.
Cao Bang City, travelers can follow National Highway 3, pass through Ma Phuc Pass, and head toward Tra Linh District. The 50-kilometer route takes around two hours by car or motorbike. Along the way, you’ll drive through terraced fields, lush valleys, and peaceful villages inhabited by Tay and Nung ethnic groups.
As you approach the Thung Valley, where Nui Mat Than stands, the view opens an enchanting panorama. The mountain towers majestically in the middle of a turquoise lake, surrounded by green rice fields and distant limestone peaks — a breathtaking sight that feels straight out of a painting.

Standing before Nui Mat Than, you’ll be struck by the scale and perfection of its formation. The mountain rises over 600 meters high, with a circular “eye” more than 50 meters in diameter right at its center. When sunlight passes through the hole, it creates a surreal glow, especially at sunrise or sunset, turning the entire valley a golden dreamscape.
At the base of the mountain lies Thang Hen Lake, a collection of natural lakes connected by underground streams. The emerald water mirrors the mountains and sky, creating a tranquil and picturesque scene. Locals often describe it as “Ha Long Bay on the mountains” — a perfect harmony of rock, water, and clouds.

The signature attraction of Nui Mat Than is its one-of-a-kind “Eye of God” hole. It’s a dream location for photographers, offering incredible shots every angle. Visit early in the morning for misty, mystical views or at sunset for soft golden light.
The open valley around the mountain is an ideal spot for camping and picnicking. Set up a tent, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and watch the sky shift colors as day turns to night. At night, under the starry sky, the reflection of Nui Mat Than on the still water below is simply magical.
Just a short distance Nui Mat Than, Thang Hen Lake features 36 natural lakes connected underground. During the rainy season, the lakes overflow and merge, creating spectacular reflections through the “eye” of the mountain. Adventurous travelers can also explore nearby caves filled with stalactites formed over thousands of years.

A visit to Nui Mat Than is not complete without experiencing the local culture. The Tay and Nung people living in this region are known for their hospitality, traditional wooden stilt houses, and delicious food.
Enjoy authentic mountain dishes such as Cao Bang sour noodles (Pho Chua), smoked sausage (Lap Suon), five-color sticky rice (Xoi Ngu Sac), and locally brewed corn wine. Staying in a local homestay allows travelers to join in daily life, share stories by the fire, and learn about the deep connection between people and nature in Cao Bang.
The best time to visit Nui Mat Than is September to November or March to May. During these months, the weather is pleasant, skies are clear, and the scenery is at its most vibrant. Early mornings often bring mist that rolls gently through the “Eye of God,” creating a scene that feels like a fairytale.
Nui Mat Than is more than just a geological wonder — it is a symbol of Vietnam’s natural grandeur and cultural depth. Its iconic “eye” stands as a reminder of the harmony between earth and sky, between people and nature.
For those seeking adventure, serenity, or inspiration, Nui Mat Than offers all three. Standing beneath its gaze, surrounded by mountains and mirrored waters, visitors can’t help but feel the sacred stillness of northern Vietnam’s most majestic landscape.
