Ma Phuc is one of the most iconic mountain passes in Cao Bang Province, northern Vietnam. Located on the route connecting Cao Bang City with Trùng Khánh and Ban Gioc Waterfall, Ma Phuc is not just a road—it is a symbol of resilience, legend, and breathtaking natural beauty. With its winding curves cutting through limestone mountains, the pass offers travelers one of the most memorable drives in the region.

Ma Phuc lies on National Road 3, about 30 kilometers Cao Bang City. The pass consists of seven sharp bends, climbing through karst mountains and opening panoramic views of valleys, forests, and rural villages below. It is a key stop on many Cao Bang itineraries, especially routes leading to Ban Gioc Waterfall and the eastern districts of the province.
The name “Ma Phuc” comes local legend, often translated as “Horse Kneeling Pass.” According to folklore, the steep and challenging terrain once forced horses carrying goods to kneel under the heavy load. Over time, the name became a reminder of the hardships faced by people traveling through these mountains in the past.
Today, modern roads have replaced old trails, but the spirit of endurance remains deeply embedded in the landscape.
What makes Ma Phuc truly special is its dramatic scenery:
Towering limestone cliffs rising on both sides
Green valleys stretching the distance
Morning mist drifting across mountain ridges
Peaceful farmland and ethnic villages below
the top of the pass, travelers can pause to admire the view, take photos, and feel the vast openness of Cao Bang’s highlands.

The road is now well-paved, making it accessible year-round, though extra caution is advised during rainy or foggy conditions.
March–May: Mild weather, clear skies, fresh greenery
September–October: Cool air, golden rice fields, dramatic clouds
Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to enjoy soft light and wide views.

Ma Phuc is often combined with:
Ban Gioc Waterfall
Nguom Ngao Cave
Trùng Khánh valleys
Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark
This makes it a natural highlight on longer Cao Bang journeys.
Ma Phuc is more than a scenic mountain road—it is a passage through Cao Bang’s history, legends, and raw natural beauty. Each curve reveals a new perspective, reminding travelers that in northern Vietnam, the journey itself is often as powerful as the destination.
